Two lawyers with the notorious Southern Poverty Law Center have been in the news in recent weeks. One is facing domestic terrorism charges; the other is votes away from a lifetime appointment to the federal bench.
The SPLC fully supports both lawyers: Thomas Webb Jurgens, a suspected Antifa terrorist arrested and charged for his involvement in a violent riot against the police in Atlanta, Ga., and Nancy Abudu, the SPLC’s director for strategic litigation, whose job involves overseeing all of the SPLC’s legal work – including its special litigation related to “hate groups.” Abudu is currently a nominee for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit awaiting a confirmation vote by the U.S. Senate.

Most organizations would, at a minimum, suspend an employee engaged in potentially criminal behavior, as Jurgens was during the violent attack in Atlanta in early March. But not only has the SPLC allowed him to retain his position, it has failed to condemn the horrific violence.
Within hours of Jurgens’ arrest, the SPLC released a joint statement with another radical group, the National Lawyers Guild. Instead of condemning the violence against police officers that took place, the SPLC denounced Jurgens’ arrest as “part of ongoing state repression and violence” and urged the “de-escalation of violence … against Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities.” The statement is ironic, given that Jurgens was engaged in terroristic and violent behavior toward those who risk their lives daily for public safety, including those from black, brown, and indigenous communities.
Unfortunately, such egregious and violence-inducing actions are par for the course when it comes to the SPLC, which has a long track record of smearing its political opponents and putting them in harm’s way. In 2012, a gunman entered the Washington, D.C., headquarters of the conservative Family Research Council looking to kill as many FRC employees as possible, and shot a security guard. The gunman later told the FBI that he had targeted the Family Research Council because the SPLC had labeled it a “hate group.” Similarly, the gunman who opened fire on Republican lawmakers and nearly killed now-House Majority Leader Steve Scalise in 2017 also followed the SPLC’s work.
The SPLC has also taken aim at public figures. In a February 2019 article titled “Hate Goes to Washington,” the SPLC curated a list of Republican candidates who SPLC said held “open white supremacist, nativist, anti-LGBT or antigovernment” views. This list included myself, as well as my colleagues Josh Hawley and Marsha Blackburn.

It’s not just conservatives who have been on the receiving end of the SPLC’s hatred. In 2018, the SPLC paid a $3.375 million settlement to Muslim reformer Maajid Nawaz, who has devoted his life to advocating for a nonviolent expression of the Islamic faith. The SPLC had included Mr. Nawaz – as well as human rights advocate Ayaan Hirsi Ali – on its so-called “Field Guide to Anti-Muslim Extremists.” In the words of Mr. Nawaz, the SPLC “put a target on my head,” resulting in death threats. And just this week, a federal judge denied SPLC’s motion to dismiss a defamation lawsuit brought against them by a coalition that works to secure our borders, which SPLC has labeled a “hate group,” meaning the case will go to trial.
That’s not all. The internal corruption – including racism, sexism, and sexual harassment – within the SPLC is rampant. In fact, right after Ms. Abudu joined the SPLC as a senior leader, the outfit’s co-founder Morris Dees and longtime president Richard Cohen were both ousted for what employees called “a systemic culture of racism and sexism within its workplace.” According to at least one former staffer who spoke out, the situation there is still every bit as toxic despite a damage control campaign led by political operative Tina Tchen, whose underhanded tactics include running cover for Andrew Cuomo, which has recently come to light.
The violence inspired by the SPLC, not to mention its internal corruption, should disqualify Abudu from a lifetime appointment to the federal bench, given her role as one of the organization’s top lawyers.

Shockingly, when questioned by the Senate Judiciary Committee on which I serve, Abudu repeatedly refused to condemn the SPLC’s violence-inspiring rhetoric. Instead, she repeatedly said how proud she is to work for an organization that has been discredited by investigative journalists and commentators from across the political spectrum for years and what even progressives have dubbed “everything that’s wrong with liberalism.”
I ask my colleagues in the Senate to reflect on the message it would send to the people we represent should we confirm someone from such a corrupt organization to the federal bench.
At a time when it’s often difficult to find points of agreement, surely we can all agree that it’s time to cut ties with the SPLC, its entanglement with racism and sexual harassment, and its campaign of hate and domestic terrorism.

Fox News chief national security correspondent Jennifer Griffin stated the network will not publish leaked classified Pentagon documents that have shocked the administration and intelligence community in recent days.
The documents, which have leaked on social media, apparently reveal spying techniques by the United States on both allies and enemies alike, along with intelligence on the war in Ukraine.
Among the revelations are doubts about the war effort, and the bombshell news that American special forces are on the ground in Ukraine.
The Daily Mail is reporting this morning that over a dozen American special forces are on the ground in Ukraine, operating in a warzone against Russian forces, according to some of the papers.
The Biden administration does not know who is behind the leaks, how extensive the scope of the document dump may be, nor have they confirmed the authenticity of the trove of records already leaked.

Fox News Won’t Publish Leaked Documents
Describing the leaked Pentagon documents as potentially “worse than the Edward Snowden” case, Griffin told colleagues that details about the scope and scale “remain sparse.”
Griffin, appearing on “The Story with Martha MacCallum,” said “some of the documents appear to have been altered,” but “many of the other documents have not.”
She speculated that the “source of the leak may not be inside the Pentagon” based on the fact that some of the leaked documents were folded while top officials receive documents via iPad.
“The revelations have sent shockwaves through the Pentagon and the national security establishment,” Griffin said before stating Fox News had agreed not to share the actual documents.
“Fox News has agreed, along with other news organizations, not to publish the leaked highly classified documents,” she said.

Kirby Warned Media Not to Share
Griffin’s comments on publishing the leaked documents comes following a warning by White House National Security spokesman John Kirby about sharing in the media.
“Again, without confirming the validity of the documents, this is information that has no business in the public domain,” he said during a press briefing earlier this week.
“It has no business — if you don’t mind me saying — on the front pages of newspapers or on television,” added Kirby. “It is not intended for public consumption, and it should not be out there.”

Journalist Michael Tracey questioned Fox News’ decision not to publish the material.
“What, just as a favor to the Pentagon or something? Being a team player?” he asked on Twitter.
“What reason would there even be to ‘agree’ to anything in this situation?”
Would the media and Fox News alike band together and refuse to publish leaked classified documents if they came out during the Trump administration?
Would the Pentagon have even bothered to request they not put the material out in the public domain? Especially if they reflected poorly on that administration?
Axios is reporting that the leak has the potential “threaten” the “Biden doctrine.”
“The leak is threatening to undermine two defining planks of (the President’s) foreign policy: strengthening U.S. alliances and supporting Ukraine,” they write.

NPR was recently slapped with a ‘government funded media’ label on Twitter.
No word on if other organizations will be reviewed for their status now that they’ve bowed to the Biden government and refused to publish the latest leaked documents.

According to an interview with Politico published Tuesday, Republican congressman from Texas Michael McCaul, who chairs the House Foreign Affairs Committee, stated earlier in April that the United States “should look at” starting a war if China strikes Taiwan.
The remarks were made by McCaul while he was accompanying a congressional group to Taiwan in early April. McCaul assumed leadership of the House’s primary foreign policy committee when Republicans won control in 2023.
Additionally, he stated that the US is not now set up for a military battle with China.

McCaul Wants Americans To Fight For Taiwan
“In the event that China attacks Taiwan, I do worry about how Congress will react. In my committee, we either vote to authorize the use of force or, as we haven’t done since World War II, vote to declare war,” McCaul told Politico. “I would contend that it won’t be a small war; rather, it will be comparable to battles fought during my father’s time. In order for the Defense Production Act to take effect, I believe a declaration of war should be considered. If this happens, we won’t experience any issues with our defense industrial base.”
According to McCaul, the majority of the faction opposed to aid for Ukraine still has strong anti-Communist-China feeling. McCaul also addressed whether he thinks there will be splinters in GOP support for aid to Taiwan like there have been for Ukraine.
He acknowledged that ordinary Americans might be more dubious: But I can hear a lot of people asking, “Why are we going to war for an island off the coast of China? Why is it important so much? If it meant declaring war, I’m not sure how the American populace would react.”

Taiwan Timetable
Regarding China’s future actions in and near the Taiwan Strait, McCaul warned that the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) would likely meddle in Taiwan’s upcoming elections, which are scheduled to take place in January 2024.
The CCP will start a disinformation effort to try and sway the vote in favor of their selected candidate, McCaul predicted, and if that fails, either an invasion or a blockade would come next.

After McCaul’s visit to the island in early April, when Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen stopped in California to meet with House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on her way back from Latin America, Beijing retaliated with abrasive military drills surrounding Taiwan. The Biden administration has referred to China’s response as a “overreaction,” while frequently emphasizing that it is not attempting to alter the current situation with regard to China and Taiwan.

It’s a wonder we don’t know more answers to the secrets that plague our world. Such as who killed JFK, whatever happened to the aliens at Roswell, and who sabotaged the Nord Stream pipeline.
Between the intelligence community and the Pentagon, there is a never-ending supply of ‘unnamed officials’ eager to speak to the press and more leaks than the Titanic. The latest leaks come from the five-sided building herself, and Biden spokesman John Kirby and the rest of the gang are in a tizzy trying to calm international partners.
So what is all this handwringing over leaked documents about, and who could’ve been behind it and why? Allow me to bring you up to speed, dear reader, and provide my best guess on how and why this could’ve happened.

Low Threat Leaks
The over 100 documents that officials say may have been obtained and released on social media could have enormous consequences. The Top Secret and Secret documents trove contained information about the United States spy efforts on our adversaries and ‘friends.’
Spying is how you build trust in this world, after all. The documents showed that we’ve been spying on:

Russia
Ukraine
Israel
South Korea

The documents also contained information on China, the Indo-Pacific region, the Middle East, and terrorism. 
Most incredibly, the documents reveal that the Biden administration has actually put American troops on the ground inside Ukraine:

The South Korean government is aware that we spy on their conversations.
However, it is rather inconvenient that they now have to answer to South Koreans why the United States government had a play-by-play recorded conversation among their leadership complaining about the U.S. pressuring them to change their no-lethal weapons to Ukraine policy.

Was It Russia Or Ukraine?
Naturally, a faction of our government would like to pin this leak on the Russians. Those trusty unnamed officials I spoke of earlier have already been blabbering to the press that the leak was from Russia or a pro-Russian group. 
There seem to be some possible clues indicating this assumption, as some of the information on the leaked documents appears to have been altered to show massive Ukrainian losses and minimal Russian losses since the war began. But then again, it could be Ukraine that was behind the leak.
This could be viewed as a possible way to distance themselves from the United States and broker a peace settlement that isn’t ideal for the West. After all, Ukraine had steadfastly hesitated to share information with us at the onset of the war due to concerns over our perpetually leaky ships…err…I mean bureaucracy.

However, that seems unlikely given that many of the documents contain the unique imprint of the Joint Staff, which wouldn’t be shared with a foreign entity. In addition, many papers had the ‘SECRET/NOFORN’ stamp, meaning don’t share with foreign countries.
Still, given the preponderance of documents related to the Ukraine war, former senior Pentagon official Mick Mulroy asserts:
“…it appears that it was a deliberate leak done by someone that wished to damage the Ukraine, U.S., and NATO efforts.”
So who did it, and why?

No Snowden Here
The documents that have rocked the U.S. government’s credibility on the world stage may have been circulating for months on Discord’s discussion platform. If you aren’t familiar, don’t worry; all that means is you aren’t a nerd.
Discord is popular with what the kids and my generation coined as ‘gamers.’ That’s right, it’s possible an overzealous Final Fantasy or World of Warcraft aficionado leaked government secrets.

It wasn’t just Discord that got a taste; Twitter and Telegram got some too – both of which make sense regarding location. Twitter is where journos live and thrive like mold beneath your shower. Telegram is a popular international secure messaging application. Then, of course, there is 4chan, which also got a fair share of secret documents.
As much as I enjoy ragging on Discord and 4chan, you don’t have to be a social media expert to know that whoever leaked these documents wasn’t doing it to unveil some gross perversion of democracy.
Many of the photos of the documents revealed that they were crumpled up at one point as if they had been shoved into a pocket hastily and laid out on top of magazines surrounded by Ziplock baggies and Gorilla Glue. So basically, these documents could’ve been residing in my junk drawer in my kitchen.

Sky High Implications
So it’s evident that the geniuses that leaked these documents weren’t in it to unveil anything of great importance and push for positive policy changes. I think it’s also pretty clear that we aren’t dealing with some diabolically brilliant super double agent. More than likely, we are seeing the work of a large ego federal employee(s) who envision themselves as a sort of Edward Snowden-esque warrior, which they are not.
Which leads me to the point, why does this even matter? Former Pentagon spokesman turned White House talking head John Kirby answered whether the administration expects more online leaks:
“The truth and the honest answer to your question is: We don’t know. And is that a matter of concern to us? You’re darn right it is.”
Wow, Kirby, I applaud your apparent honesty and also question why I ever thought you were a better-skilled communicator than Karine Jean Pierre.
Ukrainian battalion commander Lt. Col. Yurii Bereza said that the information warfare is so bad that:
“we can no longer determine where is the truth and where is the lie.”
And therein lies the rub. We should all be worried, both Americans and the international community alike if this was just some pimple-faced intel dweeb that managed to snag classified info and blast it out to his online raid party.
Or we should all be worried, both Americans and the international community alike, if that’s just what the powers that be want us to think. What is true, what is false, what is the lie, and which is the fact?
Remove those concrete concepts, and you may be the most powerful organization or nation, depending on your perspective.

Using Ohio and California as a template for the rest of the country, a report released Wednesday shows President Joe Biden’s new energy approach will likely mean higher rates and cost tens of thousands of jobs.
The Buckeye Institute, an Ohio-based policy group, examined what it called Biden’s idea to revive the Clean Power Plan. This was initially an Environmental Protection Agency rule issued during the Obama administration, rolled back by former President Donald Trump and eventually vacated by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2022.

The report says reasserting those environmental rules would have significant and challenging regulations on energy providers and the nation’s economy. The 80-year-old Biden has a stated goal to reduce carbon emissions to 52% below 2005 levels.
“With customers already getting hit with rising energy costs, imposing a new Clean Power Plan will make a difficult situation even worse and will have significant, negative economic consequences on households, businesses, and the economy,” said Rea S. Hederman Jr., executive director of the Economic Research Center and vice president of policy at The Buckeye Institute. “With customer rate hikes on the horizon and inflation high, it is time once and for all to pull the plug on federal government mandates that drive up energy costs.”
The report used the strong economies of Ohio and California, diverse geography and mixed population densities to show how the plan would likely impact the rest of the country.
Using a scoring model developed by economists at The Buckeye Institute’s Economic Research Center, researchers looked at four scenarios to estimate the impact of the new power plan on jobs and the economies of the two states.

“To achieve those respective results, both states will need to replace low-cost baseload coal and natural gas with higher cost wind and solar energy, which will raise electricity prices for businesses and families,” the report reads. “Higher utility costs will then have negative effects that will ripple through the Ohio and California economies. We anticipate those effects under four reasonable scenarios, which reveal economies hemorrhaging jobs, production and tax revenue over the next 10 years.”
The four scenarios, two each for Ohio and California, use discount rates, which convert a value received in a future time.
At a 7% discount rate by 2032, researchers calculated the new power plan would cost Ohio 10,000 jobs, and its gross domestic product would fall by $3.19 billion. They also believe consumption would decline by $550 million, investments would drop by $1.99 billion and tax revenue would tumble by $2.51 billion.
Ohio, at a 3% discount rate by 2032, would lose 14,000 jobs and $3.38 billion in tax revenue. Also, the gross domestic product would fall by $4.34 billion, investment would drop by $2.7 billion and consumption would fall by $750 million.
“Ohio is an energy-intensive state with a robust manufacturing sector, yet it does not have the geography or climate to make solar or wind power as cheaply as some states,” Hederman told The Center Square. “So, a power plan that forces people and businesses to use green energy over traditional energy sources means higher costs to businesses and families. While every state will pay more, Ohio will pay more compared to states that can more readily utilize green energy sources.”
In the 7% discount rate scenario, California would also lose 10,000 jobs, while its gross domestic product would fall by $5.11 billion, and consumption would dip by $1.87 billion. Investment would drop by $3.1 billion, and the state would lose $1.87 billion in tax revenue.

At 3%, California would lose 13,000 jobs, $4.14 billion in investment and $2.34 billion in tax revenue. Also, gross domestic product would fall by $6.84 billion, and consumption would dip by $2.5 billion.
“California and Ohio both fare poorly under a new Clean Power Plan, and the rest of the country will not fare any better,” Hederman said.
The report also expressed concern the current EPA would repeat mistakes from the Obama administration. According to the report, the EPA used flawed metrics that should have been disqualified as a tool in federal rule making.
Ohioans receive nearly 79% percent of their total electricity from natural gas and coal. In California, 34% of the electricity comes from natural gas, while 27% comes from other renewable sources.

The U.S. Congressional Budget Office said Monday the federal government has accumulated more than a trillion dollars in debt only six months into the fiscal year.
The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget released a report pointing out that those figures amount to an average of $6 billion per day so far in fiscal year 2023.

“Our fiscal challenges will only become more difficult the longer we wait to do anything,” said Maya MacGuineas, president of the CRFB. “In just five years, the national debt will surpass its record as a share of the economy – set just after World War II, when we had no choice but to borrow to win the war. However, we’re in no such emergency now. It’s long past time that policymakers figure out a way to sustainably finance their priorities, not just add the costs to the national credit card.”
The data figures come as Republicans and Democrats approach a deadline to raise the debt ceiling or face defaulting on the national debt, an unprecedented event that would have huge ramifications for the U.S. and global economy.
Republicans have pointed to those figures as proof of the need for spending cuts.
President Joe Biden, though, has shown no interest in negotiating. Democrats argue the fiscal deadline is too risky to play with in negotiations.

The CRFB said if nothing changes, the annual deficit will hit $3 trillion by the end of this decade.
“That amount of borrowing outside of a national emergency is plainly unacceptable,” MacGuineas said. “Budgeting requires tradeoffs – often painful ones that politicians don’t want to grapple with. However, that is what they were elected to do, and they should consider the needs of both current and future Americans in upcoming fiscal negotiations. We simply cannot afford to ignore our unsustainable borrowing any longer.”
