Joe Biden signed an executive order at the Rose Garden Friday afternoon directing every agency of the federal government to incorporate “environmental justice” into its mission.
As the Hill notes, all federal agencies must now take steps to mitigate “climate impacts” in American cities. It also requires them to notify affected cities in case of toxic substances are released from a federal building.
To ensure this is all carried out efficiently, the executive order creates an office within the White House Council on Environmental Quality to coordinate “environmental justice” initiatives across the federal agencies.
Here is Biden making the announcement to require his regime to make climate alarmism the top priority:

BIDEN: “Under this order, environmental justice will become the responsibility of every single federal agency.” pic.twitter.com/b5g7G65vbM
    — RNC Research (@RNCResearch) April 21, 2023

As Fox News reported, the White House previously said the executive order recognizes that “racism is a fundamental driver of environmental injustice.”
During his speech, Biden bragged about the job killing “environmental” provisions in the ironically named Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which actually increases inflation long-term.
We’re investing in air quality sensors in communities near factories so people who live near them can know what the risk is and how safe the air is.
We’re planting millions of new trees to cool down our city streets.
Biden also took aim at “MAGA Republicans.” He focused his ire on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s proposal to repeal “clean energy” tax credits in the IRA in exchange for lifting the debt limit.
The MAGA Republicans in Congress want to repeal climate protections in the Inflation Reduction Act. They’d rather threaten to default the U.S. economy … than get rid of $30 billion in taxpayer subsidies to an oil industry that made $200 billion last year,” he said. “Imagine taking all those clean energy jobs away from working-class folks all across America. Imagine turning your back on all those moms and dads living in towns poisoned by pollution and saying ‘sorry, you’re on your own.’”
As Biden sat down to sign the new executive order, he noted the desk was hot. Perhaps it was from all his lies?

It’s no secret to Gateway Pundit readers that Pete Buttigieg is the worst Transportation Secretary in American history.
He spent part of his first year not even working. Instead, Buttigieg decided to take several months of paternity leave.
But when he does work, disaster follows him everywhere.
His porous performance is best exemplified by his response to the train derailments happening all over America.
The most infamous derailment was in East Palestine, Ohio, arguably the worst environmental disaster in American history. Several million pounds of toxic chemicals were released into the environment, causing the deaths of thousands of animals. Several residents later reported horrifying symptoms resulting from the toxic derailment.
The Biden regime initially refused to lift a finger to help the residents because they wanted to punish them for supporting President Donald Trump.
Boebert summed up Buttigieg’s garbage performance with a brutal meme showing her trying to put out a fire caused by a train derailment.

Buttigieg was quite stung by the meme. He issued a pathetic response claiming Boebert’s “budget plan” cut railroad safety inspections.
Someone forgot to tell him such a plan does not exist.

    — Secretary Pete Buttigieg (@SecretaryPete) April 20, 2023

Boebert then responded in devastating fashion. She aptly pointed out the Biden regime was prioritizing woke “gender equity” nonsense over keeping Americans safe and stopping train crashes.
@SecretaryPete your administration requested $2.6 billion to advance gender equity. THAT is not putting the American taxpayer first. Nice try!

Not So Fast: Special Prosecutors Interrupt Alec Baldwin’s Celebrations with Some Painful News

Actor Alec Baldwin is not home free even though charges against him were dropped, according to the special prosecutors in the case.
Numerous outlets reported Thursday that the manslaughter charges against Baldwin in the October 2021 shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of the movie “Rust” were dropped.
Baldwin’s lawyers immediately claimed this was vindication.
“We are pleased with the decision to dismiss the case against Alec Baldwin and encourage a proper investigation into the facts and circumstances of this tragic incident,” they said in a statement.
However, in their statement Thursday night on the decision to drop the charges, special prosecutors Jason Lewis and Kari Morrissey said it does not mean they are gone for good.
“Over the last few days and in preparation for the May 3, 2023, preliminary hearing, new facts were revealed that demand further investigation and forensic analysis in the case against Alexander ‘Alec’ Rae Baldwin, III,” the prosecutors said in a statement.
“Consequently, we cannot proceed under the current time constraints and on the facts and evidence turned over by law enforcement in its existing form,” they said.
The prosecutors said the charges were being dismissed to “conduct further investigation.”
“This decision does not absolve Mr. Baldwin of criminal culpability and charges may be refiled,” they said. “Our follow-up investigation will remain active and on-going.”

    pic.twitter.com/erik1dvRH3
    — MaryCarmackAltwies (@MaryCarmackAltw) April 21, 2023

According to Variety, two things led to the dismissal.
The site reported that evidence presented by Baldwin’s lawyers indicated the gun used in the shooting had been modified in such a way that it could make it more difficult to prove Baldwin pulled the trigger – something he has denied.
It also noted that the special prosecutors had little time to prepare for the May 3 hearing amid some confusion on the prosecution side. Lewis and Morrissey were appointed in late March.
Although charges against Baldwin were dropped, involuntary manslaughter charges remain against Hannah Gutierrez Reed, the armorer for the movie.
Jason Bowles and Todd Bullion, who represent Gutierrez Reed, said they expect she will be vindicated.
“The new special prosecutor team has taken a very diligent and thorough approach to the entire investigation, which we welcome and have always welcomed,” Bowles and Bullion said, according to Variety.
“They are seeking the truth and we are also. The truth about what happened will come out and the questions that we have long sought answers for will be answered. We fully expect at the end of this process that Hannah will also be exonerated,” they said.

Dan Bongino, a fervent supporter of Donald Trump who worked as a weekend program presenter on Fox News after making several appearances on the network, is no longer employed by the publication.
According to Bongino, who hosted Unfiltered and Fox Nation’s Canceled in the USA, contract discussions broke down, forcing him to leave Fox. In a statement to Forbes, which broke the story, the network confirmed the departure and said, “We thank Dan for his contributions and wish him success in his future endeavors.”
On his most recent podcast, Bongino made an announcement about leaving the network, telling his listeners that “regretfully, last week was my last show on Fox News Channel.”
“Last week’s program finale was difficult. I assure you that it is not a huge conspiracy theory. There is no animosity…Simply put, we were unable to agree on an extension. That’s truly it,” according to Bongino. “I had a great time there. For 10 years, they were helpful to me. Sad day today. I don’t want you to believe they gave me the option to do one final concert, but they did. That’s my fault, not theirs, yet I decided to proceed in this manner for the time being.”

IRS Whistleblower Sounds the Alarm: Hunter Biden Being Protected by Feds

    By Dr. Derek Ellerman
I am going to break one of the rules I tell all my fellow writers: Never tell your audience that they shouldn’t be surprised. Why would someone want to continue reading if they already know what happens?
Well, dear reader, you shouldn’t at all be surprised by the latest allegations from an IRS whistleblower about the Hunter Biden investigation.
Yesterday, news broke that a supervisory special agent in the IRS is seeking whistleblower protections so they can divulge what’s really going on behind the scenes.
As you may have guessed, it’s being alleged that, rather than a true, vigorous investigation, the President’s son Hunter is being protected by federal bureaucrats.
On the bright side, it seems the news woke a few Republicans up from their naps.

A decorated supervisory IRS agent has reported to the Justice Department’s top watchdog that federal prosecutors appointed by Joe Biden have engaged in “preferential treatment and politics” to block criminal tax charges against presidential son Hunter Biden, providing evidence as… pic.twitter.com/onhCx5zr5x

    Hunter Biden Investigation Being Sabotaged?
The whistleblower has made several claims, all of which point to shenanigans and favoritism.
Jerry Dunleavy at the Washington Examiner reports that the whistleblower claims they can prove a senior IRS official lied under oath about the investigation, and that the entire enterprise is chock full of conflicts of interest.
The attorney for the whistleblower, Mark Lytle, said, “examples of preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed by career law enforcement professionals in similar circumstances if the subject were not politically connected.”
Sound like what we’ve seen so far? It sure does.
Readers may recall that Hunter Biden is being investigated for his business dealings with Ukraine and China – IRS involvement obviously points to tax issues.
There’s also the matter of the younger Biden allegedly lying on a firearms background check about his drug use.
Now, setting aside the FBI and CIA, the IRS are known as some of those most vicious bastards on the planet. When they get their hooks in you, they don’t let go.
    Just ask Al Capone.
But Al Capone’s daddy wasn’t the President and he did his business in the good ol’ U.S. of A.
House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer told Fox News:
“The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability has been following the Bidens’ tangled web of complex corporate and financial records. It’s clear from our investigation that Hunter and other members of the Biden family engaged in deceptive, shady business schemes to avoid scrutiny as they made millions from foreign adversaries like China,” he said. “We’ve been wondering all along where the heck the DOJ and the IRS have been. Now it appears the Biden Administration may have been working overtime to prevent the Bidens from facing any consequences.
“The House Oversight Committee will work to hold accountable anyone in the Biden Administration who may be covering up this criminal activity. The Oversight Committee will also continue to pursue our investigation into the Biden family’s business schemes to determine if President Biden and our national security are compromised. Americans demand answers, transparency, and accountability.”

    Here’s The Deal
At the risk of giving the “fact-checkers” a hernia, I’m going to give you my opinion on what is really going on.
It doesn’t matter that Hunter Biden is the sitting President’s son. Hell, it doesn’t even matter that the subject of the investigation is a Democrat.
Obviously, in this country at this time, Democrats are going to get preferential treatment from Big Brother. Most people understand that.
They don’t really understand two things.

The extent to which our institutions are captured. You may think you realize the depth of the problem, but do you? Take a look at an electoral map of the last two presidential elections, and look at the results in D.C. and the surrounding Beltway counties. D.C. voted over 90% for both Hillary and Biden. Read that again. OVER 90%. 20th Century dictators barely had the guts to claim 90% of the vote. But all those lovely bureaucrats who control the levers of power… where do you think they live?
This isn’t about Hunter Biden. Or the subject being a Democrat. It’s about Ukraine. For at least the last two decades, foreign policy has been the crucial factor for the permanent government uniparty. And today’s crusade du jour is Ukraine. Power doesn’t care about the President’s ne’er-do-well crackhead son. But they most certainly care about war. The faltering Ukraine effort doesn’t need the stink of such pedestrian scandals as a few million bucks to the President’s son.

My best guess is that the most punishment Hunter Biden would conceivably get is an ankle bracelet, if they don’t just quietly drop the case completely.
And of course, the whistleblower will likely have 20-30 “journalists” diligently digging into his background and poking holes in his narrative, rather than actually looking into Hunter Biden.
In collapsing empires, the wicked are protected and the just are destroyed.

Inspector General: American Taxpayer Dollars, Aid Could Be Going to the Taliban

Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) John Sopko testified to Congress that American taxpayer money might be ending up with the Taliban.
The Afghanistan watchdog made the shocking claim speaking with lawmakers on the House Oversight Committee Wednesday.
Sopko was trying to convey that aid from the United States may be getting picked off by the Taliban instead of going to those in need.
“While I agree, and we all agree Afghanistan faces a dire humanitarian and economic situation, it is critical that our assistance not be diverted by the Taliban,” he said.
“Unfortunately, as I sit here today, I cannot assure this committee or the American taxpayer we are not currently funding the Taliban.”
“Nor can I assure you that the Taliban are not diverting the money we are sending from the intended recipients, which are the poor Afghan people,” added Sopko.
They already got billions in advanced weaponry from Uncle Sam, what’s a few more dollars?

Sopko indicated to Congress that the United States has appropriated roughly $2 billion in humanitarian aid to Afghanistan.
Another $3.5 billion is expected to come in through an international fund as well.
Sopko also blasted the Biden State Department for a lack of cooperation in oversight efforts, saying the administration has not complied with SIGAR audits and various inquiries.
“The lack of cooperation by State … is unprecedented in the nearly 12 years that I have been the SIGAR, and I must add, in the two decades that I did congressional oversight both in the Senate and in the House,” Sopko testified.

The startling testimony comes following the release of a SIGAR report casting blame on the Biden administration for “bureaucratic dysfunction and understaffing” in trying to resettle Afghan allies.
The report spotlights a promise made by President Biden to Afghans just one month prior to the disastrous withdrawal in August of 2021.
“There is a home for you in the United States if you so choose, and we will stand with you, just as you stood with us,” said Biden.

A 2022 Army report revealed multiple commanders involved in the withdrawal operation gave sworn testimony indicating the administration failed to grasp the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, putting American troops in greater danger.
White House officials, the report stated, “failed to grasp the Taliban’s steady advance on Afghanistan’s capital.”

On NBC, Biden repeatedly dismisses the Army’s report about the disastrous U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan —

The Biden administration’s withdrawal from Afghanistan led to a suicide bombing that killed 13 service members, a ‘retaliatory’ drone strike by the United States that killed 10 civilians – including an aid worker and 7 children – and countless Americans being left behind in the Taliban-controlled country for an extensive period of time.
In addition to the 13 service members who died in the suicide bombing outside of Kabul airport, another 45 were wounded in the blast, some suffering brain injuries.
Additionally, reports began surfacing of the Taliban getting their hands on American military equipment quickly after the United States withdrew from Afghanistan.

The overall net worth of that equipment has been disputed, as figures for funding the Afghan army included not just weapons, but the cost of training and other items.
What isn’t disputed, however, is that equipment was left behind for the Taliban to acquire.
Pentagon Spokesman John Kirby admitted the Biden administration didn’t have “any policy solutions” to recoup or destroy the weapons.
The Taliban later held a parade with the equipment acquired following the withdrawal.

Fox News host Mark Levin accused the January 6th Committee of having gained access to his private emails and vowed to fight back against the “police state” tactics.
Levin called out former congresswoman Liz Cheney on social media, demanding to know how the committee “acquired 13 of my private emails.”
The radio host noted that the messages were “utterly benign” but gaining access to them constituted an illegal search.

In August, he referenced a set of at least 12 emails and challenged the committee to release them. Levin also seemed bewildered at that time as to how they got ahold of the communications.
“I’d love to know how they got them, apart from what’s in them,” he said. “Nobody came to me, I didn’t get a subpoena … How did they get my emails?”

  • Where Did All the Biden Illegal Immigrants Go? Sanctuary Cities Like New York Are Only Part of the Answer

    By James Varney for RealClearInvestigations
In New York City, if the newcomers aren’t put up at the luxury cruise terminal that served the QE2, they could get $700-a-night midtown hotel accommodations with iconic Manhattan views. In Chicago, they found themselves whisked to suburban lodgings. In Denver, officials refer to them discreetly as “guests” and you needn’t bother inquiring about their inns or addresses.
The people enjoying these free digs aren’t privacy-conscious jet-setters, but the secrecy surrounding them might be comparable: They’re some of the millions of migrants who have illegally crossed into the U.S. since the Biden administration relaxed most border controls.
RELATED: Nearly 270,000 Apprehensions, Gotaways at Southern Border in March
No one knows exactly how many people have poured across the southwestern U.S. border since President Biden took office, or where they’ve gone since. The official number of encounters by Customs and Border Patrol stands at 5.2 million people, logged over the last two full federal fiscal years and fiscal 2023 through March. But that number is imprecise because it includes repeat encounters with the same people and omits the many who slipped into the country unnoticed by border agents.
Under President Biden, the U.S. smashed past the 200,000 monthly encounters mark for the first time in July 2021 and it has repeatedly topped that record in the months since. By comparison, in fiscal 2020, which ended a month before Biden’s defeat of President Trump, the U.S. averaged 38,174 monthly encounters at the border, according to CBP figures.
Earlier: Why Hasn’t the GOP Impeached Mayorkas Yet?
Because of an official lack of transparency, all those people and the circumstances by which they have arrived and remained have made it hard to take stock of the historic influx. Through midnight flights and buses from the border to far-flung locales, the administration has made it difficult to identify where the migrants are now living and receiving services. Also unclear are the costs associated with the arrivals.
But flares have been sent up – especially over immigrant sanctuary cities like New York, Denver and Chicago, which have long promised to house migrants. While those cities are providing housing and other services for a small fraction of the recent migrants, the costs are significant for these budget-strapped metropolises.
Denver plans to spend $20 million in the first six months of this year to provide housing to migrants. Officials say this works out to between $800 and $1,000 per week per person.
In January the state of Illinois turned down Chicago’s request for more funds, saying it had already spent close to $120 million on its “asylum seeker emergency response” – or roughly $33,000 per migrant.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has asked for more than $500 million in federal aid, while pegging the city’s spending at between $2 billion and $3 billion.
Other data points of the opaque costs of Biden-era illegal immigration include Massachusetts’ estimate that it will need $28 million to launch a program to provide driver’s licenses to undocumented residents. The state is seeking a share of the omnibus spending bill passed by Democrats in December 2022 when they controlled both houses of Congress, which included $800 million for cities grappling with the influx.
RELATED: Biden to Open Up Medicaid, Obamacare to About 700,000 Illegal Immigrants
These numbers are incomplete in part because it is hard to separate the added cost of recent migrants from costs for the millions of undocumented immigrants who were in the country before the recent surge.
A March study by the conservative Federation for American Immigration Reform estimates that, after accounting for taxes paid by undocumented migrants, they cost taxpayers over $150 billion per year – a 30% increase since 2017.
Yet FAIR acknowledges the problem of fixing costs has become more difficult, given the record-breaking numbers of illegal crossers in the past two and a half years and efforts by some government agencies to mask their spending.
“We often had to grapple with a paucity of easily accessible official data,” the report notes. “Many state and federal entities do not publish detailed data that they collect, making it difficult to reliably separate illegal aliens from citizens of lawful immigrants. We have also encountered cases where the current administration has revoked or restricted documents published by previous administrations in order to reduce the visibility of data which shines a negative light on their immigration policy agenda.”
Those totals also involve far more than simple food and board. To arrive at its staggering sum, FAIR includes estimates of the costs in education, health care and law enforcement.
“The irony is not only are these sanctuary jurisdictions turning to Washington with their hands out, but that they still refuse to join with governors like Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis in demanding that the federal government take decisive steps to stanch the influx of new migrants,” FAIR spokesman Ira Mehlman told RealClearInvestigations, referring to the Republican chief executives of Texas and Florida, respectively. “The obvious hypocrisy of declaring yourself a sanctuary jurisdiction while complaining about the costs and burdens associated with it are undeniable.”
Groups that favor more relaxed border security measures, such as the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights and the American Immigration Council, did not respond to RCI’s request for comment; the liberal Brookings Institution declined to comment.
RELATED: Illegal Immigration is Surging… Across the Northern Border, Now
Cities housing many migrants have a hard time estimating costs. New York Mayor Adams has asked for more than $500 million in federal aid, while pegging the city’s spending one time at $2 billion and another time at $3 billion. Those are the sorts of bills New York has racked up putting what they call “asylum seekers” or “migrants” in hotels.
And Adams, whose requests sometimes include the claim “we are all in this together,” wants to spend even more. This month, he floated the idea of paying college tuition for illegal immigrants if they attend New York state schools outside the city.
Using Adams’ own number of some 40,000 illegal immigrants that New York City has foot the bills for, it means taxpayers are spending roughly $150,000 per person to host new arrivals. In March, City Hall scaled back its count of the number of its immigrants to 12,700, which meant the taxpayers’ were spending nearly $5 million a day to take care of them, according to a New York Post analysis.
The Office of the New York City Public Advocate, which helps immigrants navigate the benefits available to them, did not respond to multiple requests for comment. A spokeswoman for Adams declined to address questions about spending, pointing instead to various links the city maintains for immigrants and noting the city has expanded a New York County Supreme Court decision in 1981 regarding shelter for homeless people to cover immigrants.
Whatever the current official number of illegal immigrants New York is dealing with it is but a fraction of those that have poured into various Texas communities along the border.
Officials at El Paso’s City Hall, one of the ground zeroes in the illegal immigration crush, did not respond to phone calls and emails seeking comment on its spending. But Gov. Abbott said his Operation Lone Star, launched in March 2021, has “allocated more than $4 billion to do the federal government’s job and secure the border,” Abbott’s spokesman Andrew Mahaleris said.
It was Abbott who began busing illegal immigrants to some of the sanctuary cities that declare themselves so welcoming, such as New York, Denver and Chicago.
RELATED: Cruz to Mayorkas: ‘If You Had Integrity, You Would Resign’
“Texas began busing migrants to sanctuary cities last April to provide relief to our overrun and overwhelmed border communities,” Mahaleris said. “Mayors Adams, [Muriel] Bowser and [Lori] Lightfoot were all too happy to tout their sanctuary city statuses until Texas bused over 16,900 migrants, collectively, to their self-declared sanctuary. Instead of complaining about dealing with a fraction of the border crisis Texas communities see every day, these hypocrites should call on President Biden to take immediate action to secure the border – something the president continues failing to do.”
Lightfoot, departing as mayor of Chicago after her defeat in February, first turned to Illinois for millions to help the Windy City cope with its several thousand illegal immigrants Texas provided. In January, however, the state turned her down, saying it had already spent close to $120 million on its “asylum seeker emergency response.”
That response came last September when Illinois Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued an “emergency disaster proclamation.” His proclamation and the words of other state leaders presented a schizophrenic picture in which they portray Illinois as a “welcoming beacon of hope” and complain they weren’t given “official advance warning.”
Most of the money Illinois spent – more than $61.5 million, or roughly $31,000 per immigrant – went to contracts with organizations or staff “who provided on site case management and other services at multiple locations.”
Illinois dropped another $8 million on “interim housing,” nearly $4 million on “health screenings for asylum seekers, and more than $29 million on “hotel, transportation and housing costs,” according to their breakdown.
Nowhere did Pritzker or Lightfoot question the wisdom of the Biden administration ‘s border policies, and there was no indication they understood the burdens that had been put on border cities and states. Instead, the unmistakable message was that if illegal immigrants were going to be sent where the “welcoming beacon” shone, other people should pay for it.

“They can say all that is for free, but now they’re finding out they can’t have a welfare society and an open border,” said Lora Reis, the director of the Border Security and Immigration Center at the conservative Heritage Foundation.
Denver held a budget “transparency and equity” meeting earlier this month at which Chief Financial Officer Margaret Danuser said the city will have spent between $17 and $20 million on housing and other services for between 5,000 and 6,000 illegal immigrants between Dec. 2022 and this June. The city hoped to get federal taxpayers to reimburse it for $2.8 million, and a Colorado state fund for another $3.5 million.
Those figures show Denver spent about the same as Chicago at roughly $33,000 per immigrant, costs that are still far below New York City’s.
“None of these sanctuary mayors or governors have ever asked for a secure border, it was always just, ‘feds, give us money!’” said Reis. “They can say all that for free, but they are finding out you can’t have a welfare system and an open border.”

  • The Woke Revolution Is Erasing the Past

By J. Peder Zane for RealClearPolitics
Students of English and history are going the way of the dodo bird.
During just the last decade, their numbers at colleges and universities have dropped by a third – and humanities enrollment is down by 17%, Nathan Heller reports in his recent New Yorker article, “The End of the English Major.”
Data collected by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ Humanities Indicators project show that “from 2012 to 2020 the number of graduated humanities majors at Ohio State’s main campus fell by forty-six per cent. Tufts lost nearly fifty per cent of its humanities majors, and Boston University lost forty-two. Notre Dame ended up with half as many as it started with, while SUNY-Albany lost almost three-quarters. Vassar and Bates standard-bearing liberal-arts colleges saw their numbers of humanities majors fall by nearly half.”
RELATED: Don Lemon Gets Mauled by Republican for Claim That ‘Black People Don’t Enjoy Freedoms in This Country’
Conservatives who have long lamented the politicization of the humanities, highlighted by the rise of women’s studies, queer studies, ethnic studies as well as the transformation of English and history into tools for the left’s vision of social justice, might be tempted to cheer this development. They might also applaud a main driver Heller and others cite for this trend: the determination of students spooked by the 2008 economic meltdown to choose majors that can help them land decent paying jobs. Reading “Middlemarch” may be uplifting but a marketing degree pays dividends.
Unfortunately, something nefarious may be going on. It’s hard to believe that schools run by leftwing professors and administrators aggressively intent on telling students what they should think are passively responding to market forces.
It is also not farfetched to suspect that they might be allowing the humanities to wither because it is a roadblock to the woke revolution they are advancing.
English and history have always had an inherent conservative streak: They are, almost by definition, backward-looking disciplines. They have sought to conserve and thereby connect students with what the Victorian writer Matthew Arnold called “the best that has been thought and known.”
Studying the history of ancient Greece and Rome and the art of the Renaissance, reading Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Austen, Ellison, and, of course, the Bible, show us how our ancestors’ decisions shaped our world while providing wisdom as we confront the great question: How can I lead a good life?
At bottom, it is a recognition that history is ever the story, as Faulkner put it, “of the human heart in conflict with itself,” and that as we search for answers to eternal questions we can find solace by turning to the giants upon whose shoulders we stand.
This mindset is problematic for the woke revolution. It holds that there is no abiding human nature or human condition; people are blank slates upon which society stamps ideas, like pieces of factory tin. It does not see us as biological creatures with innate instincts and concerns but a collection of social constructs that can be changed like hats.
RELATED: The GOP Has Gotten Smoked in Recent School Board Races – What Happened to CRT and Gender Ideology Momentum?
Utopia is possible if everyone can be made to wear the correct ideas. This forward-looking ideology has little use for the past; it was no accident that a seminal model for our woke movement, the French Revolution, abolished our Gregorian calendar and imposed its own, declaring September 1792 to be the start of Year One.
Amnesia is the crucial psychological state for the woke revolution. In order to control thought, language, and reality itself, the left must strip people of the ability to evaluate the future plans it is peddling through reference to past experience. Those who do not remember what happened last week, last year, or a century ago are much easier to manipulate.
Hence the longstanding effort to delegitimize the past by portraying it as a parade of horribles: History is the story of shocking cruelty; classic books are instruments to oppress marginalized groups.
If you have never even been exposed to the idea that capitalism is the most liberating force in human history, the prime vehicle through which common people were able to gain wealth and power and replace authoritarian aristocracies with democratic forms of governance, then it is easy to be convinced it is simply a “tool of oppression.”
If you do not know that the American revolution was fought for human freedom, then you might accept the risible claim of the New York Times’ 1619 Project, that its goal was the preservation of slavery.
If literature and history are just cautionary tales of humanity’s wretchedness, if they are not sources of truth and beauty, but expressions of power and will, then why bother studying them?
RELATED: GOP Donors, Including Thomas Pafferty, Reportedly Abandon DeSantis for Being Too Pro-Life
Let’s not forget that the economic meltdown was not the only thing that happened in 2008, when students started fleeing the humanities. That was also when the woke revolution began emerging as a transformational force through the election of Barack Obama. It was around then that support for humanities from nonprofits and the government started drying up.
Circling the date 2007 on a piece of paper, James Shapiro, the renowned Shakespeare scholar at Columbia University, told the New Yorker’s Heller it was then that “funding goes down. The financial support for the humanities is gone on a national level, on a state level, at the university level.” A 2022 survey, for example, found that only 7% of Harvard freshmen planned to major in the humanities, down from 20% a decade earlier.
History does not provide many bright lines. It is far easier to identify correlation than causation in its movements. But as we consider the plummeting interest in the study of English and history, we should note how helpful this is to the forces of the left, who control our college and universities. The less we know about the past, the more they can shape the future.
