As readers are already aware, there’s always lots of speculation and panting by the deep-in-thought ahead of interest rate decisions by the Federal Reserve. But rather than fill many books with just how absurd the notion of central credit planning is, how about we just reduce it to the absurd: what if the Fed had raised the funds rate to 36% last week?
Would it mean anything? No, not really. Think about it.
Does anyone seriously think Jeff Bezos would have to pay 36% in order to borrow at the Fed’s artificially arrived at rate of interest? Hopefully the question answers itself, but if not the obvious reality is that Bezos wouldn’t even pay anywhere close to the present 5% rate that the Fed arrived at. Billionaires borrow much more cheaply than you and me.

Considering the above once again through the absurdist prism, the vast majority of Americans wouldn’t pay anywhere close to 36% to borrow. That’s true firstly because banks by virtue of being banks can’t take risks remotely resembling a loan that would rate a 36% rate of interest.
That’s is so because loans made by banks must perform, and a 36% rate of interest is a market signal suggesting high odds that the loan won’t be repaid. A high rate of interest is what a lender demands in “rent” in return for the possibility that the borrower will be delinquent on the rent. Banks yet again don’t take such risks.
Just as banks won’t lend at nosebleed levels if the Fed decrees such, neither will lenders in general. An artificially high price control is merely a sign that markets would and will speak, only for voluminous lending from those with title to money at rates well below the artificially high one.
At the same time, 36% is a rate of interest that is plainly too low for borrowers with limited means. Let’s call them “subprime borrowers.” Economists J. Brandon Bolen, Gregory Elliehausen, and Thomas Miller conducted a detailed study of artificial rates of interest in the aftermath of the 2021 passage of the Predatory Loan Prevention Act in Illinois. The latter put a 36% ceiling on what non-bank financial institutions could charge subprime borrowers.
What Bolen et al discovered was what economic theory has long supported: the imposition of an artificially low rate of interest would result in reduced lending. That’s certainly what happened to subprime borrowers in Illinois. Some were even too risky at 36%. Markets always have their say, and they do without regard to what central bankers might decree.

It’s all a reminder that the Federal Reserve engages in price controls without prices actually being controlled. When the central bank is at zero, there’s no lending at zero simply because credit is never costless. And it’s not costless because the most powerful investment force in the world is compound interest. The power of the previous truth tells us that while the Fed can operate in a parallel universe, there will always be a very real (and sometimes substantial) cost to accessing the goods, services and human capital that money can be exchanged for.
Just the same, artificially high rates of interest will similarly give off unreal connotations. Compound interest’s genius yet again requires that wealth be put to work, which means a Fed at 36% would reside in a parallel universe rather resemblant of central banks at zero.

It used to be that if your kid was a crackhead, you kept them out of the public eye. It must be harder though when your crackhead kid goes out and impregnates a stripper. It must be double-hard when you have to deal with the crackhead’s legal issues and be President of the United States, all at the same time.
During an interview with The Political Insider’s Brett Smith, podcast host and PR consultant Brian McWilliams discussed how Hunter Biden’s current debacle regarding his refusal to pay upwards of $20,000 per month in child support is now bleeding more openly into father Joe Biden’s administration – as well as his re-election campaign.
This topic re-emerged last week as Hunter had to travel to Arkansas for a court-ordered appearance regarding a child support dispute, as well as the mother’s attempt to legally change their daughter’s last name from Roberts to Biden. Things got more awkward later during a White House press meeting where Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre refused to answer several reporter’s questions regarding President Biden’s refusal to even acknowledge his seventh granddaughter.
A court mandated paternity test proved last year that son Hunter was indeed the child’s father.

“Is there a strategy to ignoring this whole thing?” Smith asked McWilliams’ regarding the Biden family’s silence towards Hunter’s legal dilemma and the existence of President Biden’s seventh grandchild.
“I was thinking about this again from a communications, PR standpoint and I think that there is no other strategy that they can possibly employ here,” McWilliams replied.
“I mean it looks so bad,” he continued, “and not only that, let’s not forget Karine Jean-Pierre is so incompetent at her job on a fundamental level, that to open up that can of worms in any way is just gonna look bad. She’s gonna say something stupid, you know, she doesn’t have a binder of information on this, so the only strategy they can employ is to say ‘I’m not going to comment on it’.”
McWilliams also pointed out how supposed recent changes in the legal team for Hunter has resulted in clashes with his father’s legal advisors, who have additionally had to step in to attempt to keep as much of the impact off the President and his re-election as possible.
Critics state that there could potentially be transactional information indicating that Joe Biden financially benefited from Hunter’s overseas dealings regarding a Ukrainian energy company, as well as another company tied to the Chinese government. Obviously, this would open up a whole can of issues if evidence can verify any of those potential kickbacks showed the family was involved in collusion and corruption at the highest levels possible.

Less Like ‘West Wing’, More Like ‘Jerry Springer’
“I mean, how does Joe Biden completely ignore the existence of his seventh grandchild?” Asked Smith. “I mean, is that something that’s realistic?”
McWilliams mentioned Biden’s potential loss of appeal among white, non-working suburban mothers who could potentially see this as a character flaw large enough to not support him.
“I think that can really hurt him, because he [Joe Biden] goes out there constantly talking about his six grandchildren, talking about how he loves the kids. He tells these weird stories and sniffs their heads, but this poor girl is going to go through her life never having her head sniffed by Joe, and the moms out there are sure, I guarantee,” he continued, “they’re taking note of this because going out there and saying one thing, ignoring your son’s malfeasance, ignoring his business dealings, ignoring the fact that he is a crackhead, we could all say ‘okay you could get over being a crackhead, good job… good job getting your life in check’.
“But when you’re talking about one of the most powerful families ignoring a child, meanwhile espousing family values and how you’re one of the people… why aren’t you taking the responsibility for this family member of yours?” McWilliams questioned. “What did she do to you? Nothing.”
“Your son is a crackhead and impregnated a stripper, that’s not that girl’s fault.”

What will President Biden do if his son is indicted by the federal prosecutor in Delaware? That’s one of three questions looming over U.S. Attorney David Weiss’ fateful choice.
The second is whether the indictment will go after a larger, coordinated family scheme of influence peddling or confine itself to smaller, tightly-confined issues like lying to get a gun permit and not registering as a foreign lobbyist.
The third is whether Attorney General Merrick Garland will approve Weiss’ proposed charges. Significant political calculations follow from those decisions.
It’s easy enough to answer what Garland will do. He has little choice but to approve any charges Weiss proposes after the government’s multi-year investigation. Anything else would look shady, a far cry from the neutral, apolitical justice Garland’s department is charged with dispensing. Burying the charges, after Garland’s refusal to appoint a special counsel, would embroil his department in its nastiest controversy since John Mitchell befouled it under President Nixon.
Assuming the federal attorney proposes felony charges and Garland approves them, Joe Biden faces the toughest choice of his political life.
The president’s dilemma is why it’s so interesting to follow recent speculation by Miranda Devine, a reporter and columnist for the New York Post. She’s the most informed journalist on the Hunter Biden story. Her paper broke the news about the emails on Hunter’s laptop, three weeks before the 2020 election, and Devine has done the best follow-up reporting.
To bury that story before the election took the combined, Herculean efforts of the legacy media, social media giants, and former CIA officials. Their success helped elect Biden. But the “little story that could” just keeps chugging along, mostly because the corruption is so extensive, so rich for investigation. Criminal charges now seem likely, not that the mainstream media has shown much interest.
Now, Devine is speculating that Biden is setting the stage to pardon Hunter, framing it as the actions of a loving father who backs his troubled child. “My son has done nothing wrong,” Biden told MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle in a rare one-on-one interview. “I trust him. I have faith in him, and it impacts my presidency by making me feel proud of him.”
Whether such sentiments presage a pardon, as Devine thinks, is still a guess. We can say something more concrete, though, as Biden weighs such a move. Four consequences stand out:

A presidential pardon would set off a political firestorm.
The White House will try its best to prevent any public revelation of the family’s business dealings. That means the president and his advisors want to prevent a trial, get Hunter to take a plea, and convince the judge to seal the evidence. Another option is to go trial, knowing it won’t be held until after the election.
If Biden pardons his son this year, he’s signaling he won’t run for reelection. He wouldn’t put that albatross around his own neck if he intended to face the voters.
If Biden does run and pardons his son after November 2024, the political impact depends on who wins the White House and Capitol Hill. The calculations are more complicated than one might expect.

Let’s consider each in turn.
First, a pardon would set off the biggest political firestorm since Watergate. It would look worse than self-dealing, bad as that is. It would look like the president is covering up his family’s corruption, not only to get Hunter off the hook but to prevent the disclosure of damning evidence in court.
That evidence is likely to touch many more Biden family members than Hunter, and perhaps the president himself. The more Biden family members who are implicated, the more the whole operation looks like a concerted operation to monetize Joe’s political position. It also might threaten to shred Joe’s repeated claim that he knew nothing about any family business interests or influence peddling. The wider the sleaze, the harder it is to sell that story.
The chairman of the House committee investigating these issues has said Hunter’s corruption was merely one part of the family business. And that business was selling influence. Rep. James Comer has publicly said that his House Oversight Committee has already collected evidence that nine Biden family members are involved in sketchy business deals, including substantial payments from foreign firms.
Some of those firms are closely linked to the Chinese Communist Party. Comer added that his committee is investigating the possible involvement of at least three more family members, as well as Joe Biden’s own role. His conclusion: “The entire Biden family” is entrapped in the financial enrichment scheme. So far, however, Comer hasn’t named names or provided the evidence. He says he will provide much more at a major press conference Wednesday.
Comer’s principle suggestion is that the Biden family’s influence-peddling scheme is much broader, and their criminal actions more serious, than isolated schemes perpetrated by the president’s conniving second son. He adds that his evidence points to Joe Biden’s direct involvement, including possible payments for official actions.
That is what he told Maria Bartiromo on Sunday, although he hasn’t yet provided the evidence for that incendiary allegation. Comer is also attacking the FBI for desultory investigation – which ignored much of the malfeasance – and calling out the mainstream media for its concerted silence.

The Internal Revenue Service might be implicated, too, since a lot of payments – and a lot of Hunter’s income – went through what Comer calls the family’s “web of LLCs.” A senior supervisory agent at the IRS is seeking whistleblower protection to tell Congress about “preferential treatment and politics improperly infecting decisions and protocols that would normally be followed” in investigating Hunter’s taxes.
If political pressure really was applied to the IRS over Hunter’s taxes, or if senior agents acted improperly to curry favor, those would obviously be very serious matters, legally and politically. Comer and the House Republicans in the committee’s majority want that testimony under oath and are seeking responses from the IRS and DOJ.
Anticipating an indictment soon, Comer has urged the Justice Department to hold off until his committee presents more evidence to the public this week. “When you have the opportunity to see the evidence that the House Oversight Committee will produce with respect to the web of [Biden family] LLCs, with respect to the number of adversarial countries that this family influence peddled in, and this is not just about the president’s son. This is about the entire Biden family, including the President of the United States.”
However wide-ranging the indictment is, Hunter will do everything he can to strike a plea deal and seal all the evidence to prevent its disclosure at trial. That would clearly be the preference inside the White House. But it’s not in the public interest.
If the DOJ tries to seal the evidence, it would be joining in a cover-up. The Department must require that Hunter attest to all incriminating evidence and that it all be made public as part of any plea deal. The judge himself should demand it. That requirement might kill Hunter’s willingness to take the deal. Rather than reveal the evidence now, the White House would prefer kick it down the road, to a trial date after the November 2024 election.
Whether a trial happens or not, a pardon for Hunter would be politically fatal for the president, and he and his advisers must know it. That leads to a clear conclusion. If Joe pardons Hunter this year, running for reelection becomes unrealistic. Such a self-inflicted wound would be a far more powerful signal of his intentions than a speech declaring his candidacy. There’s no way Joe would eviscerate his political prospects like that if he intended to face the voters again.
Of course, Biden could delay any pardon until after November 2024. That would still invite a high-profile congressional investigation and perhaps impeachment, but the political maneuvering would depend on the election outcome. If Biden loses and the current Republican House moves quickly to impeach, Senate Democrats would be in a bind. It takes overwhelming evidence to convince senators to humiliate a president from their own party. The only thing that would do it is overwhelming fear of their constituents at the ballot box.

The situation is entirely different if Biden wins and the Republicans take both the House and Senate. The problem, in three words, is President Kamala Harris. Although the new House would have no trouble collecting votes for impeachment, they might hesitate before passing the ultimate decision to their Republican colleagues in the Senate. Do they really want to elevate Harris into the Oval Office?
None of these prospects is a happy one. Each one adds to the misery of a country beset by lawlessness on the streets, chaos at the southern border, stagnant real income, and a looming debt crisis. We need to know whether the Biden family – not just Hunter – was engaged in a series of corrupt schemes to peddle the influence of a high-ranking government official.
We need to know all the family members involved and their business partners. We need to know what they were paid for doing and who paid them. What we don’t need is a weak, narrowly-drawn indictment, an official cover-up of the evidence, and, worst of all, a self-serving presidential pardon.

Instead of U.S. Border Patrol agents apprehending, detaining and deporting people who’ve illegally entered the U.S., they will be implementing a plan decided on last year to release them en masse into local border communities.
The public health authority Title 42, which has given Border Patrol agents an additional tool to deport certain individuals, was slated to end last May. On May 20, 2022, the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Louisiana enjoined the repeal of Title 42 in a case filed by 24 states, issuing a nationwide injunction.
The federal court order was the only thing that stopped CBP from enacting its policy of releasing foreign nationals en masse into local border communities. The federal injunction imposed last May halted the administration from ending Title 42.
After President Joe Biden ended the national public emergency implemented under the Trump administration to slow the spread of the coronavirus, Title 42, which can only be utilized during a public health emergency, will expire Thursday (May 11).
While Fox News reported on Tuesday that CBP and Border Patrol made a decision Monday night to “authorize all Border Patrol sectors to begin ‘safe’ street releases of migrants to communities across the border *if* NGO shelters and CBP facilities do not have the capacity to hold them,” this isn’t a new plan.
It’s been a plan in place for over a year, which The Center Square first reported on last September. Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody uncovered the plan as part of discovery in a lawsuit Florida filed against the administration over its “catch and release” policy.

Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Border Patrol Agent Gloria Chavez also told local Texas law enforcement last December she was working with local municipalities to learn where foreign nationals should be released into their communities when shelters, NGOs and nonprofits assisting them were at capacity. A recording of her remarks was provided to The Center Square, which broke this story ahead of her giving testimony before the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability in February.
In a May 19, 2022, memo, Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz instructed Border Patrol agents to release “processed noncitizens in the vicinity of nongovernmental organizations” and coordinate with NGOs in advance as to the specific locations where they’d be released, “paying particular attention to the availability of services and transportation options.”
“If safe locations are not available” to release illegal foreign nationals, instead of processing them for removal, Ortiz said agents would “engage with nearby cities and local governments to identify alternate safe locations for release.”
Foreign nationals were also instructed to be released into the U.S. in a “safe, humane and orderly manner,” not “late at night in an unpopulated area or in circumstances in which the individual would face a known safety risk.”
On Dec. 20, 2022, Chavez told local law enforcement that she was coordinating with local mayors and NGOs to move people into the U.S., saying the NGOs “are phenomenal.” She was learning of “particular areas they [mayors, local officials] want us to drop them off at.”

Many Texas border counties first issued declarations of disaster in early 2021 after their communities were inundated with people committing crimes and burdening local taxpayers with services they didn’t have the resources to provide – including thousands infected with COVID-19 who were released into local communities even while Title 42 was in place.
By July 5, 2022, the first county judge and later judges and commissioners of over 40 Texas counties declared an invasion, arguing Mexican cartels are bringing in drugs, terrorists and criminals through the southern border using “migrant warfare” and “nonconventional warfare” to do it.
The amount of fentanyl being seized by law enforcement in single vehicles over 100 miles from the border in Texas, Arizona and California is enough to kill entire populations of small cities and towns. The amount of fentanyl Texas Operation Lone Star officers have seized since March 2021 is enough to kill everyone in the United States.
More counties are likely to issue disaster and invasion declarations as the Biden administration continues to facilitate “legal pathways” for people from all over the world to illegally enter the United States. An estimated 13,000 are expected to arrive a day when Title 42 ends, officials have estimated, or roughly 4.6 million within a year.

Twitter owner Elon Musk posted a response to Tucker Carlson’s internet-breaking announcement that he was taking his show to the social media platform, urging personalities on both sides of the political spectrum to follow suit.
The former Fox News host posted a video to Twitter on Tuesday that has since reached nearly 90 million views at the time of this writing.
Carlson began by dissecting the corrupt legacy media, explaining how they control the narrative while walking a tightrope of reporting “facts” in such a vague way that they technically qualify as such.
“Starting soon, we’ll be bringing a new version of the show we’ve been doing for the last six and a half years to Twitter,” he said. “We bring some other things too, which we’ll tell you about. But for now, we’re just grateful to be here.”

Elon Musk Responds to Tucker Carlson
The Political Insider reported two weeks ago on another video posted by Tucker Carlson shortly after his firing from Fox News in which he indicated that there are still “some” places Americans can go to speak the truth.
“Where can you still find Americans saying true things?” Carlson asked. “There aren’t many places left, but there are some.”
That place appears to be Twitter.

Musk responded to Carlson’s bombshell announcement with a level-headed response noting that Carlson would be subjected to scrutiny just like any other content creator on the platform. He also refuted speculation that he and the former Fox host had struck up a deal.
“On this platform, unlike the one-way street of broadcast, people are able to interact, critique and refute whatever he or anyone may say,” Musk tweeted. “And, of course, anything misleading will get @CommunityNotes.”
“I also want to be clear that we have not signed a deal of any kind whatsoever. Tucker is subject to the same rules & rewards of all content creators,” he added.

Musk urged personalities on both sides of the aisle to follow Carlson’s lead. He even sought out former CNN anchor Don Lemon, who was also recently fired from his network.

Will Fox News Block the Move?
Aside from bringing his show to Twitter, Tucker Carlson has expressed interest in hosting an alternate GOP presidential primary debate as a counter to his old network’s own debate.
But his grand plans could still be thwarted by Fox News.
The New York Times reports that “Fox could ultimately block any attempt by the host to return to a prominent role in conservative media.”
Carlson’s contract status could very well limit his options until his deal with the network runs out by January 2025. Sources have indicated he’d be willing to forgo millions of dollars owed to him in his Fox News contract just to have the opportunity to continue playing a role in the political commentary scene.
And he appears poised to fight his way out of the contract. A letter from his lawyers accused the network of fraud and breach of contract, foreshadowing further legal action.

The letter accuses Fox employees, including “Rupert Murdoch himself,” of having broken promises “intentionally and with reckless disregard for the truth,” constituting fraud.
It also points to a possible contract violation by suggesting Fox has leaked private communications to the media.
The Political Insider late last week reported on leaked messages which showed Carlson critical of the network’s decision to call Arizona so early for Joe Biden during the 2020 presidential election.
Carlson’s critique of the mainstream media now applies to Fox as well with his presence missing from the network.
“At the most basic level, the news you consume is a lie — a lie of the stealthiest and most insidious kind,” he said.
The truth will now be the exclusive domain of Twitter.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency due to “increased numbers of migrants” arriving in New York. The emergency declaration comes just months after she said illegal immigrants were good for her state’s economy.
Hochul’s response comes as Texas Governor Greg Abbott has been busing illegal aliens to New York City where, in turn, Mayor Eric Adams has begun sending them to upstate locations.
It’s odd. The ‘sanctuary city’ doesn’t want them. And now the ‘sanctuary state’ feels they present an emergency situation.
Hochul’s declaration portrays the influx of illegal immigrants as a humanitarian crisis and notes local governments “lack the infrastructure, facilities, and resources necessary to meet the … demand to house and meet other basic needs of the large numbers of migrant arrivals.”
The increased number of illegal immigrants, Hochul states, “creat(e) a threat to health and safety, which could result in the loss of life or property.”
Imagine what border states or towns must be going through.

Hochul Declares State of Emergency Over Illegal Immigrant Surge
Not only is Governor Kathy Hochul a grade-A hypocrite for declaring a state of emergency over the illegal immigrant surge, but she is also just a few months removed from having encouraged it.
Responding to Abbott’s move to spotlight the border crisis by busing illegal aliens to New York City, Hochul suggested New York could use the cheap labor.
“I just did a farm tour upstate New York. They’re begging for workers,” Hochul told reporters. “I walked the streets of Manhattan, I walked the streets of Albany — there’s help-wanted signs everywhere.”
She added, “We are a smart, thoughtful country, and can put aside everybody’s passions around this and say: ‘This is actually good for our economy.’”

Guess it’s not actually good for the economy anymore.
In her State of the State speech earlier this year, Governor Hochul failed to mention the illegal immigrant invasion because she felt it wasn’t important enough.
“In my State of the State, there’s hundreds of other proposals for talking about,” she dismissed. “I was focusing on my key signature areas that have broad, statewide interest — housing, mental health challenges, the childcare and the minimum wage.”
From not being important enough to even talk about to a disaster emergency in just four months. Stunning incompetence.

Upstate NY Counties Fight Back
New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ efforts to ship illegal immigrants out of the Big Apple have been ongoing for months. The Political Insider reported in February that he had been busing illegal aliens to the frozen border of Canada.
The mayor’s administration was paying multiple companies to provide “re-ticketing” services to those who wish to relocate to other locations. Illegal aliens were provided “free bus tickets” (free means taxpayer funded) to Plattsburgh, New York, about 20 miles south of the Canadian border.
A spokesperson for Mayor Adams said at the time: “As we have said since the beginning of this crisis, our goal is (to) help connect asylum seekers who want to move to a different location with friends, family, and/or community and, if needed, re-ticket to help get people to their final destination, if not New York City.”

Adams has since attempted to spread illegal immigrants throughout upstate New York. Those communities are revolting against the move.
Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin blasted Adams as a “failure.”
“Obnoxious Adams thinks he can dictate to other county leaders what is going to happen. I don’t answer to him,” he insisted. “He was incompetent as a Senator and he’s worse as Mayor.”
McLaughlin declared his own emergency declaring hotels in the city of Troy would be forbidden from entering into a contract to house illegal immigrants.
“Pick a different city picture other than Troy for your illegal invasion advertising,” McLaughlin tweeted responding to an informational guide from New York City calling for “four-month temporary housing options for asylum seekers” in upstate counties.

McLaughlin mocked Hochul’s emergency declaration.
“Hapless Hochul’s emergency order does nothing but spend billions to spread this illegal insanity throughout the state,” he claims. “Not a word from her to Biden about stopping this invasion because she is fully on board with it.”
It’s funny. This administration keeps suggesting they’re looking into the ‘root causes’ of illegal immigration. Yet they never look within. They never look at their own policies.
Officials in Rockland and Orange counties, two other locations Adams has targeted for shipments of illegal immigrants, have also declared states of emergency to fight back.
