COVID-19 likely spread due to a mishap at a Chinese laboratory, the U.S. Energy Department stated according to a Wall Street Journal report that said it got its information from a classified intelligence report that was given to the White House and members of Congress.
The Wall Street Journal noted that the Energy Department had previously stated it was not certain how the virus emerged. The shift was cited in an update to a 2021 document published by the office of Director of National Intelligence Avril Haines.
NBC News followed with its own report that the Energy Department concluded with “low confidence” that the pandemic started due to a laboratory leak in Wuhan, China. NBC News cited two sources with “direct knowledge” of the situation.
Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, many in the media have labeled claims that COVID-19 came from a lab in Wuhan, China, as misinformation.
The Washington Post reported May 25, 2021, “The possibility that the coronavirus emerged from a lab was quickly dismissed by scientists in early 2020.”

USA Today reported on March 21, 2020, “Suggestions that coronavirus was manmade or engineered for use in Chinese bioweapons are false.” In February 2021, USA Today updated the story to alter its ruling to “partly false” to reflect “current information.”
The classified report, NBC reported, says that the consensus was that COVID-19 was not the result of a bioweapon but that the leak was an “accident,” citing an anonymous source.
“I’m 100% CONVINCED that the virus was made in the Wuhan lab,” Ronny Jackson, a physician and U.S. Congressman from Texas, posted on Twitter. “We’re going to uncover the cover-up. We’re going to find out how tied Fauci was to funding this. We’re going to find out EVERYTHING about the origins of Covid!!”
Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases until he retired at the end of 2022, told NBC’s “Meet The Press” in November 2022 he had a “completely open mind” about the origin of COVID-19.
Fauci said that respected virologists had strong evidence the virus jumped from animals to humans, according to Politico.
However, in May 2020 Fauci told National Geographic “the best evidence shows the virus behind the pandemic was not made in a lab in China.”
National Geographic reported, “Based on the scientific evidence, he [Fauci] also doesn’t entertain an alternate theory – that someone found the coronavirus in the wild, brought it to a lab, and then it accidentally escaped.”

Nate Silver, founder of Five Thirty Eight that does opinion poll analysis, criticized the suppression of discussion on whether COVID originated from a lab.
“The behavior of a certain cadre of scientists who used every trick in the book to suppress discussion of this issue is something I’ll never forget,” Silver tweeted. “A huge disservice to science and public health. They should be profoundly embarrassed.”

The news broke last week that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has given Tucker Carlson of Fox News access to thousands of hours of surveillance video from the day of the Jan. 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol in 2021.
Naturally, this has led to panic on behalf of the usual suspects – the leftist mob who are not outside the Capitol but within its halls. These petty tyrants think only they should have access to information – and control its release.
First up was Rep. Bennie Thompson, the former chairman of the House Select Committee on January 6, who could have released the footage any time he wanted during the 18 months when he was supposedly seeking the truth.
His statement was typical of the smears progressives employ to kill the messenger before the message can get out. You know the type. Just think back to the phony claims that Hunter Biden’s laptop was a “Russian information operation” and the accompanying attacks on the New York Post for trying to get the laptop’s incriminating information to the public.
Thompson’s statement suggested that providing the footage to Carlson created “significant security concerns” and said Carlson “routinely spreads misinformation and Putin’s poisonous propaganda.” Not to be outdone, former chairman of the House Intelligence Committee and known liar Adam Schiff, called Carlson a “right-wing propagandist” and “a man who spews Kremlin talking points.” The California Democrat was joined by fellow select committee member Jamie Raskin of Maryland who smeared Carlson again as a “Pro-Putin journalist.”
How did one of America’s top journalists become a Putin puppet? Well, to decipher that, you have to go back at least to the 2016 campaign and the two years after, when the New York Times and Washington Post won Pulitzer Prizes for making up stories about how Donald Trump was either a willing partner of Russia or an unwitting stooge. Carlson never bought into the hoax. He was exposing the Democrats’ narrative as the cynical nonsense it was, and therefore he had to be destroyed.
Then when he asked hard questions about the war in Ukraine, Carlson became an enemy of the national security state – yes, the same national security state that President Eisenhower warned us against as long ago as 1961. Unfortunately, the national security state now controls most of the national media, and the pro-war forces don’t like not being able to control Carlson, so they have to attack him endlessly. His coup in obtaining access to the Jan. 6 footage is just the latest opportunity.

You can be sure that the New York Times, the Washington Post, CNN, and MSNBC will do everything they can over the next week to smear Carlson for having the temerity to actually allow the American public to make our own judgments about what the footage shows – and reach our own conclusions about why Nancy Pelosi hid the Jan. 6 footage for two years.
Instead of condemning Carlson and Speaker McCarthy, all loyal Americans should be thanking them for deciding that “we the people” ought to be trusted with the facts, not spoon-fed them selectively. Heck, the Democrats didn’t even think we could be trusted with knowing how much surveillance video existed. For months, we have been told there were 14,000 hours of raw footage, but now we find out it is actually as much as 44,000 hours. Did anyone on the Jan. 6 committee even try to wade through that footage to see if it confirms their pre-established narrative of an armed insurrection? Or were they afraid of what they would find?
Whatever they thought then, it is obvious what they think now – that it will be dangerous for the American public to see what really happened. And until the footage is aired on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” there’s no guarantee we will see it. You can be sure that Democrats in the House will be working overtime to keep that from happening, just as Democrats in the White House worked feverishly to convince Twitter and Facebook to suppress Hunter’s damning laptop. The common thread always seems to be that anyone opposed to Democratic Party politics is a Russian stooge or a Putin puppet.
When I heard those criticisms of Tucker Carlson, it reminded me of a similar canard used against another journalist many years before, a journalist who like Carlson was unafraid of entrenched power and who stood up for American principles at every opportunity.
That journalist was Edward R. Murrow, who exposed the anti-American demagoguery of Sen. Joseph McCarthy at a time in the 1950s when most members of the media – like most citizens of the country – were terrified of being labeled a Communist if they didn’t carry a torch for McCarthy’s witch hunt.
Murrow’s program “See It Now” was noted for fearless journalism, and the March 9, 1954, episode entitled “A Report on Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy” was the high-water mark of Murrow’s career, leading to the eventual condemnation of McCarthy by the Senate.
Being a fair-minded journalist, Murrow offered McCarthy a full episode of “See It Now” to respond to Murrow’s report. In that response, McCarthy resorted to the same name-calling tactics that Thompson, Schiff, and Raskin used last week in attacking Carlson. The only difference was that McCarthy smeared Murrow, the most reputable journalist of his day, as a Communist rather than a tool of Russia, though the difference is mostly academic when you think about Putin’s past.

McCarthy attacked Murrow as “a symbol, a leader and the cleverest of the jackal pack which is always found at the throat of anyone who dares to expose individual Communists and traitors” and claimed that Murrow, “as far back as 20 years ago, was engaged in propaganda for Communist causes.”
Most significantly, McCarthy dressed up in the mantle of a defender of freedom just as the members of the Jan. 6 committee tell us they are defenders of democracy. He proclaimed that his wish to humiliate, harass, and lock up anyone who had ever spoken a kind word about communism was to ensure that “We Americans live in a free world, a world where we can stand as individuals, where we can go to the church of our own choice and worship God as we please, each in his own fashion, where we can freely speak our opinions on any subject, or on any man.”
So, too, do the Democrats in charge of the Jan. 6 committee proclaim that they are defending democracy against those who have different opinions about an election, who were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and who can apparently be locked up for years without trial. But if democracy needs defending, it is not from protesters, but from those who believe only their truth can be spoken, only their narrative can be heard.
Like Murrow, Tucker Carlson can be counted on to follow the facts, and for that reason he is indeed dangerous – not to democracy, but to demagogues.

President Joe Biden’s call for funding for 87,000 IRS agents to audit Americans has raised questions about whether the new rash of auditing will target poorer Americans or be politically motivated.
The Inflation Reduction Act included $80 billion to beef up IRS efforts, which Biden says will more than pay for itself in new audits.
Biden’s nominee to lead the Internal Revenue Service, Daniel Werfel, addressed concerns over this policy at his recent confirmation hearing but promised lawmakers the audits would target wealthier Americans.
“…the audit and compliance priorities will be focused on enhancing the IRS’ capabilities to ensure America’s highest earners comply with applicable tax laws,” Werfel said.
Critics have argued, though, there are not enough wealthy Americans to audit to justify tens of billions of dollars for auditors. They also argue the IRS’ behavior in recent years suggests the IRS will go after poorer and conservative Americans.
“The Joint Committee on Taxation, Congress’s official tax scorekeeper, said that 78% to 90% of the money raised from under-reported income would likely come from those making less than $200,000 a year, with nearly half of the audits hitting Americans making $75,000 per year or less,” House Ways and Means Republicans said in a statement.
The Informing America Foundation released a new report detailing the IRS’ recent missteps.
“The IRS is targeting low-income Americans and conservative nonprofits,” the report said. “President Biden massively expanded the IRS, which improperly scrutinized conservative nonprofits, Americans in the black belt, and more.”
The IRS reached a $3.5 million settlement with hundreds of Tea Party groups in 2018 after news broke that the Obama administration’s IRS targeted those groups.

In 2021, the IRS had to overturn its own ruling after it denied a Christian group nonprofit status. The agent who made the ruling said the group did not qualify because “Bible teachings are typically affiliated with the [Republican] party and candidates.”
Christians Engaged, the group in question, was able to get the ruling overturned, but critics say this kind of case shows the mentality of at least some IRS employees.
“The recent determination on Christians Engaged’s tax-exempt status further exposed the corruption and liberal bias running rampant at the IRS,” U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, said at the time. “This discriminatory action against a Christian nonprofit is an overt attack on religious liberty by a tyrannical federal government. Moreover, this decision comes at a time when members of both parties are trying to increase the ability of the IRS to harass individual Americans, businesses, and organizations.”
Just this year, the IRS announced a program to crack down on tip reporting from waiters and waitresses.
“Strange. I was reliably told that the expanded IRS would only target the rich…,” Hunter Estes, communications director for Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves, wrote on Twitter.
Meanwhile, the IRS is steeped in other issues. As The Center Square previously reported, the agency faces major backlogs, questions over millions of destroyed documents and more.
The House Ways and Means Committee sent a letter earlier this month to the Biden administration raising questions about how thousands of IRS documents were leaked to ProPublica. The leak may have had political motives, since it was used to prove, as ProPublica put it, that “the very richest pay lower rates than the merely rich.”

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen told the Senate Finance Committee in June 2021 that she would look into the leak, but so far Congress has received few answers.
America First Legal, a conservative group led by former Trump administration officials, has also raised concerns about the Treasury Department’s recent equity commitments. They say those policies could be used to make decisions about who to audit based on race.
“The notion that race should play any role whatsoever in the IRS’s operations is absurd, offensive to the American ideal, and illegal,” said Gene Hamilton, America First Legal Vice-President and General Counsel. “But the Biden Administration is so blinded by its relentless obsession with race that it is willing to make IRS enforcement decisions based on the race of American citizens. We will fight their attempts to erode equality under the law and expose their attempts to inject toxic ‘equity’-based policies throughout the federal government.”

What’s happening at the southern U.S. border with Mexico is in fact an invasion, Kinney County Sheriff Brad Coe says.
“We’re experiencing a silent invasion of military age men,” Coe told The Center Square when describing what his deputies have been increasingly facing over the past two years.
He spoke with The Center Square during an Operation Lone Star task force multi-day operation during which law enforcement officers rescued foreign nationals from a burning vehicle and revived a five-year-old girl being smuggled who’d been stashed inside of a car’s trunk.
The “silent invasion,” Coe said, is being committed primarily by single, military age men between the ages of 17 and 45 who are illegally entering the U.S. They’re wearing camouflage and carrying backpacks, according to video captured by cameras placed throughout the county viewed by The Center Square. Many are armed and dangerous, committing robberies and engaging in shootouts with law enforcement, Coe said.
The men are believed to be working or associated with Mexican cartels. Once they arrive in major U.S. cities, they are embedded with gangs and or cartel affiliates acting like a “Trojan horse,” Coe said. “They set up in our cities, take over through voting and or crime, and scare the local people who move out. It’s happening in Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio,” he said, where crime has also exponentially increased over the last few years.
He said, “You can win a lot of battles without getting violent,” referring to the “silent invasion” as an act of war against the U.S. by Mexican cartels.
Coe last month sent out an SOS asking for help from other counties to apprehend human smugglers in his small border county of roughly 3,000 people. In response, law enforcement officers from 20 agencies participated in a days-long operation during which The Center Square participated in a ridealong.

As soon as the task force got started, officers were engaged in smuggling pursuits. He said, “the more people we have, the more effective we’ll be” at pushing smugglers and gotaways “out of the area.” Gotaways are those who illegally enter the U.S., don’t request asylum or make other immigration claims, and intentionally evade capture.
A retired Border Patrol agent, Coe took office Jan 1, 2017, and says he’s never seen what’s he seeing now in his entire life. Things first started getting bad after President Joe Biden altered border security and immigration policies, and have only gotten worse since, he said.
In 2022, for example, his deputies made 877 arrests, filing 3,057 felony charges. Of all the criminal cases filed that year, 927 were immigration-related involving illegal foreign nationals or smugglers, he said.
While these numbers are unprecedented, the number of people who got away are even greater. Detected on cameras making their way through the county on foot, nearly 21,500 foreign nationals were detected but weren’t apprehended last year. That’s at least seven times the size of the county’s population. Their whereabouts are currently unknown.
“The other unknown,” he said, “is what’s not on camera. You might see two or three are on camera but shadows are also visible indicating there are more people behind them. The camera only shows the 2 to 3 people.”
In 2022, Kinney County Sheriff’s deputies apprehended 3,192 illegal foreign nationals compared to the 1,124 they apprehended in 2021, according to the sheriff’s data.
In 2022, they apprehended 741 smugglers compared to 169 in 2021, Coe said, as he went through the data with The Center Square.
His deputies engaged in 139 pursuits and 136 bailouts in 2022 compared to 61 pursuits and 56 bailouts in 2021.
In 2022, they impounded 580 vehicles compared to 179 in 2021.
In 2022, deputies also seized 89 firearms carried by alleged smugglers, including some that were stolen, up from 29 in 2021.

Despite increased resources and funding through Gov. Greg Abbott’s border security mission, Operation Lone Star, apprehensions and crime continue to escalate, Coe said.
So far in 2023, their efforts and the stats are already breaking last year’s records across the board, he said. At least 6,600 illegal foreign nationals have been captured on cameras crossing through the county on foot, he said. “That’s an average of 150 a day. These are people who aren’t being caught,” he added.
His deputies already have apprehended 398 illegal foreign nationals and 96 alleged smugglers so far this year. They’ve also engaged in nearly 30 vehicle pursuits, including 27 bailouts, nearly all involving human smugglers, he said.
The majority of the alleged smugglers they’re catching are men from Houston between the ages of 17 and 25. Earlier this month they apprehended a 14-year-old who evaded arrest driving a stolen car, he said.
The overwhelming majority of alleged smugglers they’re arresting are U.S. citizens responding to social media ads hoping to make several thousand dollars per load. Those caught include a licensed security guard, attorneys, couples, and teenagers, Coe said.
Americans are coming to Kinney County from all over the U.S. Initially, they were from Oklahoma and Louisiana; now they’re also coming from Georgia, California, New York, and New Jersey, he said.
Their efforts would be severely limited were it not for support from the state, he said. “We couldn’t do what we’re doing without Operation Lone Star. Our county attorney handled 4-5 cases a month. Now it’s 150 every time we have court and we have court four times a week. We used to have district court once a month, now it’s 100 cases every time. The jury pool is busy, and we may end up with two grand juries to convene every other week.”

Hope you own some physical copies of literary classics, because at the rate we’re going no story is safe.
In a move that shouldn’t come as a surprise since sensitivity readers have already gone after Roald Dahl’s classic children’s books, now British author Ian Fleming’s James Bond novels will be undergoing changes and sensitivity reviews as not to offend modern audiences.
Terms including but not limited to racially derogatory language will be scrubbed and swapped out in a new series of editions set to come out in April. In order to not have to face the mob of Twitter millennials who may pick up a Bond novel written in the 60’s and be offended by them, the publisher sought to do this in time to coincide with the anniversary of Fleming’s debut book which launched the Bond franchise, Casino Royale.
According to The Independent, “Some depictions of Black people have also been reworked or removed, but references to other ethnicities, including the use of a term for East Asian people and Bond’s mocking views of Oddjob, Goldfinger’s Korean Henchman, remain.”

Live and Let Edit
By editing out some sections of dialogue and descriptions of characters, they’re stepping on the artist’s integrity. Books, much like any other artwork, are supposed to activate emotion within the read— whether positive or negative.
However, while they say they are editing the books as to no offend modern readers, they’re removing aspects of the characters and stories that add a degree of depth to the fictional world. 
The Independent points out that in Live and Let Die, one line which was changed involves Bond’s view of several “African would-be criminals” who are “pretty law-abiding chaps I should have thought, except when they’ve drunk too much.” The new version now reads “pretty law-abiding chaps I should have thought.”
Who is to say the assessment of a fictional character is incorrect? James Bond is a British spy who lived during a different age, can he not remain a relic of that age, good or bad depending on the reader’s own view?
Well, the line of where they decided to or not to change things isn’t clear much either.
Phrases such as the “sweet tang of rape, “blithering women”, “man’s work”, and homosexuality being called a “stubborn disability” have all been kept in. So who are these sensitivity readers trying not to offend? It seems they kept in everything derogatory towards women, Asians, and gay people but they draw the line at Black readers for some reason.
Why not go ahead and change everything? Why not scrap the whole catalogue and canon and make Bond a blue haired, fat, liberal feminist woman who sells state secrets? Why not make him entirely a reflection of the woke new world order?

Censor Another Day
It seems the publisher wants to have their cake and eat it too, and with the knowledge that their changes won’t be substantially woke or politically correct for some, have added a disclaimer at the beginning of these new editions.
The disclaimer states, “This book was written at a time when terms and attitudes which might be considered offensive by modern readers were commonplace.
“A number of updates have been made in this edition, while keeping as close as possible to the original text and the period in which it is set.”
In this moment I remember one of my favorite lines from Casino Royale, which reads “History is moving pretty quickly these days and the heroes and villains keep on changing parts.”
Yes, Mr. Bond, they do indeed.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz is poised to sign a pair of bills that recently passed the state Senate which restore the voting rights of convicted felons immediately upon release and grant the ability for illegal immigrants to obtain a driver’s license.
First up is legislation known as the Restore the Vote bill, having passed the Senate last week and the House’s version going through earlier this month.
Both chambers are controlled by Democrats. CNN reports that Walz is “expected to sign the legislation” as soon as this week.
Minnesota will join 22 other states in restoring the voting rights of convicted felons the moment they leave prison – regardless of what happens during their parole. Three others allow criminals to vote while incarcerated.
CNN informs that Republican senators attempted to introduce amendments “preventing incarcerated people who had been convicted of more violent crimes, including child rape, from having their voting rights restored under the bill.”
Democratic state Senate President Bobby Joe Champion, according to that report, dismissed concerns of that nature because “anyone who reoffended would ultimately have to go back to prison.”

Minnesota Governor Set To Sign Bills Restoring Voting Right For Felons, Give Licenses to Illegal Immigrants
Next up for Minnesota’s Democrat Governor Tim Walz – the Driver’s Licenses for All bill that will allow illegal immigrants in the state to apply for driver’s licenses.
The bill calls for the removal of a rule implemented by former Governor Tim Pawlenty that required driver’s license applicants to show proof of legal residency in the United States, such as a social security number.
The text of the legislation states that applicants are “not required to demonstrate United States citizenship or lawful presence in the United States.”
Republican Minnesota state Sen. Glenn Gruenhagen had argued that the legislation could lead to bigger problems.
“What in your bill prevents that terrorist from coming to Minnesota, getting a driver’s license, and getting on an airline and committing a terrorist act?” he asked.
Republicans again tried to amend the bill by including the text “Not for Flying” or “Not for Voting” with their belief that access to a license could lead to more nefarious actions.

Friend to Criminals
It should come as no surprise that Minnesota governor Tim Walz is a friend to felons and illegal immigrants.
This is the same man, after all, who waited on National Guard help from former President Donald Trump when widespread arson fires and looting were advancing in Minneapolis and St. Paul during the George Floyd riots.
He then turned around and requested that the feds declare Minnesota a “major disaster” zone in a letter to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), stating events amounted to the second most destructive incident of civil unrest in American history. 
The Trump administration rejected the request and $16 million federal bailout.

Late-night talk show host and self-proclaimed comedian Jimmy Kimmel mocked Fox News for their anti-woke commentary and urged them to “make your own homophobic potato dudes.”
As Kimmel is not exactly a comedic genius, it’s rather easy to determine his joke is a reference to when the Hasbro toy, Mr. Potato Head, suddenly went gender-neutral to placate about three people in the entire country who might have found offense with a toy being referred to as ‘Mr.’
Kimmel is no Andy Kaufman, Richard Pryor, or George Carlin. It doesn’t take a Mensa candidate to figure out his humor.
The host of Jimmy Kimmel Live! showed numerous cut-and-paste clips of commentary from Fox News hosts supposedly showing their obsession with woke culture.
It’s a lazy tactic meant to deliver a false narrative popularized by the Daily Show and Jon Stewart who knew their audience wasn’t smart enough to digest full-length news clips or columns.
After airing the montage, Kimmel declared to Fox News, “You’re embarrassing yourselves.”
“Instead of constantly bitching about these products, make your own things. Nobody’s stopping you,” he said.
“Make your own homophobic potato dudes or your angry white guy breakfast cereals, or your little plastic bricks to build a wall around a sombrero, do whatever you want because I have some Fox News for you, you’re embarrassing yourselves,” added Kimmel.

Jimmy Kimmel Goes After Fox, Conveniently Forgets His Own History
Jimmy Kimmel accusing Fox News of being alternately homophobic, racist, or xenophobic is rich. It’s an example of incredibly selective amnesia, considering he has examples of each of these things in his own past.
Indeed, the man who launched his career by making young scantily-clad women jump on trampolines to the delight of teenage viewers at MTV, has some homophobia of his own to address.
Kimmel in 2018 joked about Sean Hannity or former President Donald Trump’s supposed preference of being a ‘top’ or a ‘bottom.’
He then made another comment of a sexual nature in his feud with the Fox News host.

Maybe instead of suggesting Fox make their own “angry white guy breakfast cereals,” Kimmel should instead watch old clips of his angry blackface skits mocking NBA legend Karl Malone.
Kimmel did multiple skits in which he ridiculed the basketball Hall of Famer and member of the famed Dream Team, donning blackface and proceeding to butcher the English language in an attempt to portray ‘The Mailman’ as ignorant.
Seems super anti-woke if you think about it.
In one skit Kimmel as Malone talks “about white people getting deducted by alien.” He sports blackface, a black bald cap, and apparently spray for his arms and legs.

In another episode, Kimmel speaks as Malone promoting Mardi Gras.
“Ya’ll love them naked boobies, so Karl Malone tell you about Mardi Gras in New Orleans,” he says.
Kimmel did eventually apologize many. many years later for the blackface skits and for using the n-word in a comedy song routine.
And rather than tell Fox to “build a wall around a sombrero,” perhaps Kimmel can address his own xenophobia exhibited when he mocked Melania Trump’s accent.

Getting Smoked by Gutfeld
It’s easy to call out Jimmy Kimmel’s hypocrisy over his comments about Fox News. It’s easy because he’s not a complex creature. The rubric for solving his humor is rather basic.
But maybe it’s best to just let Jimmy talk, knowing it’s going to backfire on him eventually.
Several years ago, Kimmel claimed that the late-night talk show scene is dominated by liberal hosts because conservatives simply aren’t smart enough for the gig.
“It just so happens that almost every talk show host is a liberal and that’s because it requires a level of intelligence,” he said during a live event for the liberal podcast “Pod Save America.”

Fast forward to today, and Fox News’ own late-night host Greg Gutfeld is smoking the competition across the board in ratings. And that includes Jimmy’s little show over at ABC.
If only Kimmel were a little more intelligent, he might one day get ratings like Gutfeld’s.
