  • The DualSense Edge is Sony’s best controller ever – and gives the Xbox Elite a run for its money

The DualSense Edge is Sony’s best controller ever – and gives the Xbox Elite a run for its money

I’ve always really wanted to love the DualSense, Sony’s quite groundbreaking controller overhaul for the PlayStation 5. And yet, I admit, since as far back as when I was playing the PS5 pre-release, I had my doubts. Those feelings persist to this day – but now, Sony has a new type of DualSense, an expensive premium version of the pad, and it’s without a doubt the best version of this controller. It might even be the best ‘elite’ controller offering on the market – watch out, Xbox.
Let’s deal with the elephant in the room first, though, yeah? My primary issue with the original DualSense was the battery life, and I regret to inform you that the DualSense Edge isn’t any better – in fact, it’s worse. Very early into the PS5’s life I mused that all those extra bells and whistles on the PS5 controller – lights, haptics, resistant triggers, motion-sensing – it was all nice, but I’d generally trade most of it for a controller with better battery life. I do generally stand by that opinion, especially with how I’ve seen those features used, with the truly groundbreaking uses of them few and far between – Astrobot, still the gold standard years in!
But, I digress. If you, like me, had a problem with the battery life of the DualSense, the bad news is that the Edge won’t make a difference to that complaint. However, the DualSense Edge comes packed with other neat features and a really strong build quality – and that makes me far more likely to forgive the battery life and get on with it. It’s now absolutely my go-to PS5 controller; I’ll ignore my originals. Read more

  • The best Life is Strange game is on PlayStation Plus right now – and it’s not what you think

The best Life is Strange game is on PlayStation Plus right now – and it’s not what you think

There’s always a moment of fear when you deign to return to a beloved game. While films often emerge unscathed by the sands of time, gaming’s beholdence to rapidly advancing tech makes its classics age faster than everyone in that M. Night Shyamalan movie. It was with some trepidation, then, that I booted up Life Is Strange: Before The Storm, half a decade after I first fell in love with it. It turns out I needn’t have worried – because developer Deck Nine’s drama-filled debut is still just as endearingly emo as it was in 2017.
To those who don’t know their Max Caulfields from their Nathan Prescotts, Before The Storm is a prequel to the wildly successful college dorm drama, Life Is Strange. When Square Enix first announced unknown developer Deck Nine would be revisiting the fictional town of Arcadia Bay, the internet responded with a collective shrug. It’s hard to blame it, really; how often do prequels offer anything other than crushing disappointment? From 2020’s nothing-y big screen Sopranos tie-in, to George Lucas and Ridley Scott famously defecating themselves in prequel trilogy form, hopes for this Life Is Strange stop-gap weren’t exactly high.
Yet it appears that Lucas and Scott are simply no match for the storytelling prowess of the minds that brought us PS1 snowboarding banger, Coolboarders. Formerly known as Idol Minds, the gnarly studio decided to rebrand as Deck Nine interactive – drifting its way into the world of Life Is Strange and landing a totally tubular 180 of its own.

  • Xbox Game Pass is the best thing to ever happen to Monster Hunter

Xbox Game Pass is the best thing to ever happen to Monster Hunter

It’s totally possible to play Monster Hunter Rise solo. You can make it through all the main storyline without jumping into an online lobby at all. Kill this, capture that, go out and carve the other. It’s a simple enough through line, even for a complete beginner (you just might get the wind knocked out of you by a couple of horns and claws en route). But that’s not how Monster Hunter is best experienced. Much less, Monster Hunter Rise – the latest game in the long-running series from Capcom. Originally launching on the Nintendo Switch, then PC, and now all the other consoles, Monster Hunter Rise is a fascinating entry in the esteemed action-RPG series. It’s the first game to come after Monster Hunter World; the game that dragged the franchise into the mainstream. Rise isn’t like World: it’s easier, more readable, more ‘arcade-y’.
Hunting in Rise is fast, fun, and frenetic. With the aid of your Palico and Palamtue (that’s a cat and a dog, in Monster Hunter language), you can ride into battle, locate your quarry, and set about bringing it down. Break its body parts, slice off all the bits it needs to attack you, and chip away at its defenses, and eventually you’ll kill it – or capture it. Congratulations; you and your pets have bagged a monster. Now, carve it up and see what you can make out of it.
